Here we are reading the book. We each have our own copy and follow along while Ms. Zamzow reads aloud to us. This helps us figure out hard words and helps us build fluency while listening. Our next lesson will involve taking a close look at the beginning and end of the story to notice how the author grabbed our attention (introduction) and tied the story together (the conclusion).

We are learning to notice how characters change in stories. We noticed that in the beginning of the book, Edward did not know how to love anyone but Abilene. At the end of the story, he had loved many others: Lawrence and Nellie, Bull and Lucy, Bryce and Sarah Ruth, and finally Maggie and Abilene again.
